“You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to show up.” – Sarah Rosensweet

If you’re like a lot of the parents I work with, you’re worried about all the times you’ve ‘messed up’ and you secretly worry you haven’t done a good job as a parent.

Guess what?

Your child doesn’t need a perfect parent.

They need you to show up and be present, physically with time spent together. They need you to show up and be present emotionally, when they’re happy or when they’re sad or mad.

They need you, with all your flaws, to keep showing up with intention to regulate yourself and show them that you’re there for them, no matter what.

When you mess up, or you’re not there, or you try and fail to understand, or you yell, they just need you to repair. “I’m sorry. I messed up. I love you. You don’t deserve to be yelled at.”

I’m not saying we give up and don’t try hard to be peaceful and present. We just need to give ourselves a little grace.
